Sorted Extension Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how the Sorted - Instagram Reel Sorter Chrome extension ("Extension", "Sorted", "we", "our") handles data when you use our Extension.

Overview

Sorted collects ZERO personal data. We are committed to your privacy. All processing happens locally in your browser, and no information is ever transmitted to external servers.

Data Collection

What We DO NOT Collect

• ✅ No personal information (name, email, phone, address)

• ✅ No Instagram credentials (username, password, authentication tokens)

• ✅ No browsing history or activity outside Instagram

• ✅ No analytics or tracking data

• ✅ No device information (IP address, location, device IDs)

• ✅ No user-generated content (posts, messages, photos)

• ✅ No Instagram account information (followers, following, profile data)

What We Process Locally

The Extension processes the following data locally in your browser only:

1. Instagram Reel Metrics

   • Like counts, view counts, comment counts

   • Reel timestamps (for "oldest" sorting)

   • This data is read from Instagram's GraphQL API responses that are already loaded by Instagram

2. User Preferences

   • Last selected sorting type (Most Liked, Most Viewed, etc.)

   • Last selected quantity (25, 50, or All reels)

   • Stored using Chrome's storage.local API on your device

Important: All reel data is temporarily cached in your browser's memory while sorting is active. This cache is cleared when you navigate away from the page or close your browser.

How the Extension Works

GraphQL Interception

When you visit an Instagram profile's reels tab:

1. Instagram loads reel data using GraphQL API requests

2. Our Extension intercepts these responses (which you can already see in your browser's network inspector)

3. We extract engagement metrics (likes, views, comments) from the responses

4. This data is processed locally to sort the reels

5. No data leaves your device

Local Processing Only

• All sorting algorithms run in your browser

• No external API calls or network requests are made by our Extension

• No data is uploaded, transmitted, or stored on remote servers

• The Extension works entirely offline (after Instagram's data is loaded)

Permissions Explained

The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions:

storage Permission

Purpose: Save your sorting preferences between browsing sessions

What It Accesses:

• Your last selected sort type (e.g., "Most Liked")

• Your last selected quantity (e.g., "50 reels")

What It Does NOT Access:

• No passwords or sensitive data

• No data from other websites or extensions

How to Clear: You can clear all Extension data by:

1. Right-clicking the Extension icon

2. Selecting "Options" or "Extension options"

3. Clicking "Clear all data" (if implemented)

4. Or by uninstalling the Extension

activeTab Permission

Purpose: Detect when you're viewing an Instagram profile's reels tab

What It Accesses:

• Current tab URL to determine if you're on Instagram reels

• Page title to update Extension popup status

What It Does NOT Access:

• Content from other tabs

• Your browsing history

• Tabs you're not actively viewing

host_permissions (instagram.com)

Purpose: Read reel metrics from Instagram pages you visit

What It Accesses:

• Instagram page content when you're actively viewing reels

• GraphQL API responses from Instagram's servers

What It Does NOT Access:

• Other websites (Google, Facebook, etc.)

• Instagram direct messages or private content

• Content from accounts you don't have permission to view

Third-Party Services

We use NO third-party services. The Extension:

• Does not integrate with external APIs

• Does not use analytics services (Google Analytics, Mixpanel, etc.)

• Does not connect to advertising networks

• Does not use crash reporting tools (unless debugging is explicitly enabled by the user)

• Does not communicate with our servers or any other servers

Data Storage

Chrome Local Storage

The Extension uses Chrome's storage.local API to store:

• Sorting preference: String value like "likes", "views", "comments", or "oldest"

• Quantity preference: Number value like 25, 50, or "all"

Storage Size: Less than 1 KB Storage Location: Local to your Chrome browser profile Retention: Indefinitely until you clear Extension data or uninstall

Temporary Memory Cache

While sorting is active:

• Reel metadata is cached in browser memory (RAM)

• This cache is automatically cleared when:

  • You navigate away from the Instagram page

  • You close the browser tab

  • You close Chrome

  • You click the "Reset" button in the Extension

No persistent cache is created on your hard drive.

Instagram Data Access

What Instagram Data We Read

When you use the Extension on Instagram, we read:

• Public reel metadata: Likes, views, comments, timestamps

• Reel IDs: To identify and sort reels correctly

• Profile information: Only the username of the profile you're viewing

What We Do NOT Read

• ❌ Direct messages or private conversations

• ❌ Your Instagram login credentials

• ❌ Private account content you don't have access to

• ❌ Stories, feed posts, or explore content

• ❌ User profiles beyond the current viewing context

Instagram's Terms of Service

Important: While the Extension reads publicly available data that Instagram already loads for you, the use of extensions may be subject to Instagram's Terms of Service. We do not:

• Scrape or store Instagram data

• Automate actions without user initiation

• Access private or restricted content

• Make unauthorized API calls

User Rights

Access to Your Data

Since we don't collect any data, there is no data to access. All processing happens locally in your browser.

Data Portability

The Extension does not store any user data that can be exported. Your sorting preferences are stored locally and can be viewed in Chrome's extension settings.

Right to Deletion

To delete all Extension data:

1. Remove preferences:

   • Uninstall the Extension (Chrome removes all associated data automatically)

2. Clear cached data:

   • Close the Instagram tab

   • Cached reel data is automatically cleared from memory

3. Complete removal:

   • Navigate to chrome://extensions/

   • Click "Remove" on Sorted extension

   • All data is permanently deleted

Right to Object

Since we don't collect data, there's nothing to object to. However, if you prefer not to use the Extension's sorting features, simply don't activate it or uninstall it.

Children's Privacy

The Extension does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children under 13 (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction). Since we collect zero data, the Extension can be used by anyone with an Instagram account (which requires users to be 13+).

International Users

The Extension works globally and does not transfer data internationally because:

• All processing happens locally in your browser

• No data is transmitted to servers in any country

• No data leaves your device

Security

How We Protect Your Privacy

1. No data collection: The best security is not having data to protect

2. Local processing only: All operations happen in your isolated browser environment

3. No network requests: The Extension doesn't make external API calls

4. Open source: Our code is publicly available for security review at [GitHub Repository URL]

5. Manifest V3: We use Chrome's latest extension manifest for enhanced security

What You Can Do

• Review our open-source code before installing

• Monitor network requests in Chrome DevTools (you'll see zero requests from our Extension)

Cookies

The Extension does NOT use cookies. The only storage mechanism is Chrome's storage.local API for user preferences.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do:

1. Version number: The version number at the top will be updated

2. "Last Updated" date: Will reflect the date of changes

3. Notification: Significant changes will be announced via:

   • Extension update notes in Chrome Web Store

   • Notification when you open the Extension after an update (for major changes)

4. Review: We recommend reviewing this policy periodically
